Center Introduction
Outline of the Center and Purpose of Establishment
The University of Tsukuba's “Designated National University Corporation” concept envisions a “true university” that “creates new academic fields based on interdisciplinary collaboration” and contributes to solving global issues through cross-disciplinary research that transcends disciplines and organizations.
In the medical and healthcare fields, we are promoting joint research with multiple national research institutes and companies located in Tsukuba City, with Tsukuba Science City at its core, a potential global biocommunity area where cutting-edge science and technology research and development institutions are concentrated. We are also implementing a Co-Creation Space Project (bio field/policy priority field) to promote the formation of the "Tsukuba Digital-Bio International Center," which combines interdisciplinary life science research covering medicine, food, and the environment based on the world's largest variety of human, animal, and plant bioresources with artificial intelligence technology.
In addition, we are starting to build an infrastructure for inter-organizational collaboration within the University of Tsukuba to utilize big data accumulated in the Tsukuba area, such as the Ecotil survey research conducted by the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) and the SIP project (National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences) that investigated the impact of dietary habits on health.
Based on these research fields, accumulated results, and cutting-edge research infrastructure, this project will incorporate cutting-edge digital (AI) technology and advanced engineering technologies such as Cybernics to solve problems in the medical field, and will organize Center for Cyber Medicine Research, where medicine, informatics, and engineering work together under one roof, and will build a research system in collaboration with local governments and companies for social implementation.
This interdisciplinary research system will lead to the development of human resources with bio-first digital analysis technology, and by creating a virtuous cycle of research in new academic fields and human resource development, we aim to contribute to the creation of a wellbeing society.
Greetings from the Director of the Center
In order to solve issues in the field of medical healthcare, it is important to understand and control the “Diversity and Dynamics of Medical Information,” in which the occurrence of diseases and health conditions are dynamically changing along the time axis from healthy to unwell, and from early to late stage of disease, by understanding the diversity of genomic, lifestyle and environmental factors, and the uncertainty of medical information. Therefore, in April 2024, the Cyber Medicine Research Center was established with a focus on clinical medicine, with cutting-edge experts in informatics, engineering, life sciences, and social medicine collaborating in an “under-one-roof” approach to solving problems. The Cyber Medicine Research Center has established three research divisions, Digital Patient, Digital Hospital, and Digital Society, as well as a Medical AI R&D division.
The center aims to be the first medical DX research center in Japan that integrates advanced science and technology in medicine, informatics, and engineering to promote a wide range of medical device development and drug discovery research from the stage of pre-disease to hospitals and nursing care, utilizing a cyclical data linkage system of medicine, food, and the environment created in cooperation with local governments and communities. We will continue our efforts to achieve results and accomplishments, and to implement issues in the medical field into society through a comprehensive system of integrated research in the fields of medicine, informatics, and engineering.

Center Features
- Reproduce “Diversity and Dynamics of Medical Information” in cyberspace by collecting and digitizing diverse medical, lifestyle, and environmental information in accordance with medical issues.
- Develop and research AI technology that can predict the future and think in accordance with solving issues in the medical field based on multi-layered digital information.
- Social change through engineering technology and policy recommendations is needed to implement the results of AI analysis of medical and social digital information in society.

In order to achieve this objective, the center will be led by clinical medicine, and will bring together cutting-edge wisdom from informatics, engineering, life sciences, and social medicine, with experts from each field working together in an “under-one-roof” approach to solve problems.
